So how would you describe your role?
Essentially IT development jobs are about creating more intelligent ways to offer better prices to our clients. Therefore jobs in IT development involve analyse, design and implement software solutions covering many different areas - including Java trading tools, risk management applications, settlements, confirmation engines, data analysis tools and in depth pricing models. The rest of your time is spent testing code infrastructure, developing build processes, gauging the effectiveness of solutions and providing support to end users.
While there’s a broad range of Developer roles within Coutts, we all share certain responsibilities. For example, all those in IT development jobs are expected to work collaboratively to deliver effective solutions that are right first time. But there’s no set process for us to follow in developing solutions, so this means that my views are considered just as valid as anyone else’s.
What kind of skills do you need?
In IT development jobs your solutions must be targeted for specific business areas, and so you need to fully understand their issues, needs and objectives. This means jobs in IT development involve building sound working relationships within the business, so I make the most of my people skills – it’s not a role for people who prefer to work in isolation. It’s quite a fast paced environment, so I have to be able to act quickly and decisively. IT development jobs require you to be proactive too, developing smarter ways of working and improving processes for the team and wider organisation – which also adds to the variety of your role.
What kind of career progression can you look forward to?
When you’re ready to progress within the scope of IT development jobs, you won’t necessarily have to relinquish the hands-on technical aspects of your existing role. Of course, there are Team Leader and other line management roles available, but if I want to become a Senior Technologist or Architect without these responsibilities, then I know this will be supported too. Because of the diversity of jobs in IT development available, we’re encouraged to move between teams during our career to find the balance of team atmosphere and work content that suits us best.
Is there anything about the role that you think might not suit some people?
If you feel uncomfortable working with individuals such as Traders who may become quite directive and demanding when under pressure, then jobs in IT development might not be the right direction for you.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
IT development jobs allow you to work autonomously – you’re not checked up on every five minutes. Having the chance to use a range of different processes and technologies means you can learn even more about software development. And because I’m essentially at the heart of major change programmes in the bank, I can see the solutions I’ve helped to create deliver real value to the business. That really motivates me.
If the area of IT development jobs sounds like something you’ll thrive in, then we’d like to hear from you. Joining us, you’ll also enjoy a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package that you can tailor to suit your individual needs.
