Compliance Manager

So how would you describe your role?

Compliance jobs involve you being responsible for articulating and managing operational and regulatory risk policies on behalf of the Group. Because the business structure here is so complex there’s not always consistency in systems and controls within compliance jobs, and compliance monitoring can be challenging. So one part of my role is designing and agreeing common metrics and terms for use across the Group. For jobs in compliance; it all comes down to a drive for continuous improvement here at Coutts.

My role is more focused on reviewing than the transactions side of compliance. Compiling adequacy and effectiveness reviews, I present my reports and findings to senior management and also liaise with risk management staff across various Divisions to see if common themes or concerns are emerging.

Another aspect of those in compliance jobs, is managing operational losses collections. Jobs in compliance involve reviewing loss data completion and accuracy certificates - challenging where necessary and then reviewing or escalating. Compliance jobs can sometimes involve giving presentations to the Board on new policy or system requirements; or how to identify the resource impact of a change in loss data collection activity with an accompanying action plan.

I’ve found that doing this role at Coutts differs from other organisations in that there’s a lot more engagement with rest of the business. They bring in the money. And I help stop it from leaking out.

What kind of skills do you need?

Those in compliance jobs need to be pragmatic, as there are usually competing priorities and people aren’t always convinced of the value of compliance activity. Jobs in compliance require you to make the most of your people skills, as face-to-face meetings tend to be your most effective tool – gaining peoples’ buy in and commitment by consulting, empathising, sharing ideas and getting their input as soon as possible. Having confidence in your decisions is important too, as sometimes you have to challenge senior management – and be commercially and politically astute in the process. Compliance jobs also require you to keep up to date with the latest thinking and industry developments and interpret them for the Group, you need to be able to quickly get to grips with new information.

Have you been given any training to help you perform your role?

Those in compliance jobs will receive very thorough training, which helped give me an overview of what all the risk teams are doing and the context in which we operate. I work as part of a team of knowledgeable, supportive professionals who are subject matter experts in their field, so I know that I can easily ask for help if needed.

What kind of career progression can you look forward to?

Jobs in compliance enable a great insight into the Group as a whole – and so there will be lots of opportunities for me to develop my career here as a result.

Is there anything about the role that you think might not suit some people?

You probably wouldn’t be suited to this role if you feel uncomfortable in a constantly changing environment. It’s about taking a more expedient approach too, rather than implementing 100% best practice solutions every time.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I’ve always enjoyed detailed analysis and problem solving within compliance jobs, so this is a perfect role for me. It’s also good to have a manageable pace of work, and have the time for brainstorming and healthy debate with my colleagues. Being able to sell the value of compliance activity to others is rewarding too.
