Audit Manager

So how would you describe your role?

It’s an audit role with a lot of variety. Unlike audit jobs at most other firms I’m not limited to just one business – in fact I spend around 30% of my time away from my usual office location. Jobs in audit mean that one week you could be based at a branch, the next in a big collection centre.

Variety also comes from a flexible approach to leadership on our audit projects – I have the opportunity to act as both team leader and team member on a rotational basis with my peers in the audit function. When it’s my turn as team leader, I act as a virtual manager and provide feedback, coaching and support that will feed into other team members’ appraisals.

Generally time in audit jobs are divided between planning and preparing for audits, conducting them in the field and producing written reports summarising the results. This also gives me the opportunity to develop and enhance audit methodology. During the audits themselves, I conduct interviews with the business and test risk controls - for example by trying to access a customer’s personal details. As well as this, audit jobs require you to conduct ongoing risk monitoring, provide quarterly ratings on how business areas are doing and liaise with them on follow-up activity.

What kind of skills do you need?

In an audit jobs role I’m expected to be an ambassador for Risk within the business, so I have to use my people skills to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders. I need to be able to understand their business objectives so that I can deliver audit appraisals that add real value.

Although I’ve earned the respect of people throughout the business, jobs in audit can result in you coming up against some robust challenges and debates, so you need to be confident in your convictions and well prepared so that you can back up your views with hard evidence. Audit jobs require you to exercise patience at times, as it can take a while to gain buy-in from all the relevant stakeholders. And it pays to be flexible too, as instant demands are common and longer term planning can be more difficult in audit jobs.

Have you been given any training to help you perform your role?

I had a very thorough Audit-focussed induction programme when I joined, and I know that the organisation is committed to helping me achieve my future career objectives – whether these are jobs in audit, or another area of the business.

Is there anything about the role that you think might not suit some people?

I’d say that if you prefer to work in isolation in a purely desk-based role, then jobs in audit are not for you.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

It’s refreshing not to be spending all of my time sitting quietly behind a screen – audit jobs involve lots of interaction with people at all levels across the business. I also enjoy the autonomy and power of escalation, while the opportunity to develop new audit methodology gives me both a professional and personal challenge. There’s a real sense of achievement in audit jobs, knowing that I’m adding real value to an organisation going through unprecedented levels of change.

If this sounds like a role that you’ll thrive in, then we’d like to hear from you. Joining us, you’ll also enjoy a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package that you can tailor to suit your individual needs.
