Credit Manager
So how would you describe your Credit Manager Job?
Essentially, I work with the business to help grow the book profitably by getting the right type of customers, maximising bottom line profit and working in partnership with Commercial to drive profitability. I also apply the risk principles of RBS to manage the bank’s credit profile.
On a day-to-day basis I utilise my lending discretion to make a balanced risk assessment of credit propositions, either to make the decision myself, or to inform a more senior decision maker. When I receive a credit application from a Relationship Manager, first of all I check it to see that it’s been accurately completed. Then I research the client’s risk profile and use my analysis and judgment to reach a lending decision. Sometimes Relationship Managers also come to me for help on credit risk issues or to help develop internal or client credit strategy.
What kind of skills do you need for a Credit Management Job?
I spend a lot of time meeting with others to describe risk policy and driving adherence to this, so good communication skills are important in my role. I’m also involved in some challenging debates, so I need to think creatively to come up with a middle ground that suits both parties and is within the regulations. I have to be able to analyse complex numerical information too. And at the end of the day I need to be firm in my views, because if a deal won’t work then I need to say ‘no’ with justification and not keep debating it.
Have you been given any training to help you perform your Credit Management Job?
I’ve found that generally there’s a big focus on succession planning and ensuring that we’re multi-skilled.
What kind of career progression can you look forward to?
Later in my career, I could pursue a vertical move in credit or perhaps move into another risk discipline. I can also choose to work for a credit team in various different parts of the business.
Is there anything about a Credit Management Job that you think might not suit some people?
You need to be able to work in a fast paced environment with changing priorities, and not feel pressurised with the spotlight on your activities from the Government regulator.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I like having the power to make decisions that would normally be done by committee in other banks. And I take pride in the fact that my views play a central part in key business decisions for the bank – I genuinely feel valued. I’m also enjoying the opportunity to develop my own area of specialism.
If this sounds like a role that you’ll thrive in, then we’d like to hear from you. Joining us, you’ll also enjoy a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package that you can tailor to suit your individual needs.
