Technical Specialist Assurance Manager

So how would you describe your role?

Assurance Jobs involve leading a team of Assurance Analysts, where you manage the Internal and Third Party Assurance for one of the bank’s business functions. This involves producing an Assurance plan for the business function, identifying the necessary resources and deciding the team composition required. Once I’ve established this, I provide insight into the level of risk present in the area and the adequacy and effectiveness of the control processes in place.

To achieve this, those in assurance jobs must initiate reviews, identifying which tests are most appropriate to include, and co-ordinate the review process according to RBS guidelines. After the testing phase you then take a step back and look at the wider impact of the issues identified, which enables you to propose enhanced system improvements both within your area and across the organisation.

More widely, jobs in assurance are responsible for creating, reviewing and issuing Assurance-related documentation to the business, providing updates to senior management and contributing to the overall Assurance strategy. To help those in assurance jobs keep track of everything you will also be involved in the creation of a review calendar that provides a consolidated picture of business as usual, gap analysis and future threats.

What kind of skills do you need?

In assurance jobs you have to be proactive in driving action plans to address identified risks and, as you can probably tell, good project management skills are important in this role. As well as coaching and supporting my team I need to build good relationships within my business area and with third parties, and so excellent interpersonal skills are a must.

Having a good knowledge of banking and financial services business processes is useful in assurance jobs, and so I have to make sure I keep my professional knowledge up to date. I also need to be able to travel to different office locations too.

What kind of career progression can you look forward to?

Jobs in assurance allows you to get a strong grounding in formal risk management, which is an excellent base for taking my career into more specialist areas of risk, such as physical or fraud. And although there’s a relatively flat hierarchy here within assurance jobs, there will be opportunities for vertical job moves as well. I’ve also got the option to move into a related area such as Audit.

Is there anything about the role that you think might not suit some people?

I’d say that if you prefer to spend more time doing the detailed Assurance work rather than project managing it, then assurance jobs are not likely to be for you.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Jobs in assurance allow you to relish the opportunity to impact on the overall Assurance strategy. Taking account of such a wide range of risk activity is an interesting challenge too. But most of all I enjoy building up the Assurance function and being responsible for the successful development of my team.
