We are on a journey to rebuild a bank that is safe and sustainable, that serves our customers well and rebuilds shareholder value.

A major part of that restructuring is de-risking the balance sheet and then transforming the way we manage risk going forward. The role of the Risk Management function is therefore critical to the Group's turnaround and future success. The Group has made good progress and has delivered on all commitments to reduce risk but there remains much to do.

The Risk function faces a sizeable challenge to both address the legacy issues and get the Group back to a more conservative risk profile, and continue to support the delivery of enhancements to become a top quartile risk management function.

All of this makes working in Risk Management within RBS, at this time, an excellent opportunity to drive legacy changes in how the bank runs its businesses and manages its risks. We have set high standards that we have to deliver to ensure that RBS is sustainable for the long term. A lot has been done already to build the new tools, processes and culture that are required and we now have the exciting challenge of embedding this work across all of our businesses. We believe that managing risk is everyone's business at RBS and the Risk function has a key role to play in making sure that how we do this is best in class going forward.
